Thousands of elementary and middle school students have learned chess in our after school clubs and summer camps in DC since our very first club in the city in 2011. We've worked with public, private, and charter schools in Wards 2, 3, 5, and 6, but we'd be happy to do more! Some students have won District championships but most of our students are new to chess and looking to learn a fun new game.
The MLK Chess Club welcomes chess players of all ages and skill levels! We meet the second Saturday of every month to play chess and learn basic techniques of the game.
Players can play games ranging from ten-minute blitz to one-hour games or extended games that last a few sessions. Games will not be officially ranked. Brief one-on-one coaching for people who desire it can be offered by library staff while games are in progress. And we will occasionally hold a chess tournament where players can compete!
